Ethanol
Ethanol – As some of you may be aware, Washington State law will make the use of Ethanol Gasoline mandatory in the state by December 1, 2008. Chevron stations started the transition in May. The Shell Gasoline Brand will be begin the transition on June 1, 2008. This means that the Foss Harbors Fuel Dock will be forced to begin selling gasoline that contains 10% ethanol. Adding ethanol to fuel has many environmental advantages such as: carbon monoxide emission from fuel can be reduced up to 30%, reduces smog forming emissions and reduces emitted greenhouse gases. However, before you fill your boat with gasoline containing ethanol there’s a few things you should know:
1. Ethanol attracts water. Gasoline tanks containing more than .35% water are at risk of having ethanol phase separate into an alcohol and water layer. To avoid this, make certain there is no water in the boat’s gas tank before fueling with ethanol.
2. If storing the boat for more than 60 days, it is recommended that the tank be 7/8th capacity. Non ValvTec gasoline should be treated with ValvTect Marine Fuel Stabilizer.
3. Gasoline containing ethanol has been documented to cause a chemical reaction with the resin in some fiberglass fuel tanks. For boats with fiberglass fuel tanks, it is STRONGLY recommended that boaters contact their boat manufacturer to make sure their fuel tank is compatible with ethanol fuel.
4. Ethanol acts as solvent and will break down any deposits and sediment buildup. To prevent problems pump out all water and sediment in gasoline storage tanks and install special ethanol compatible fuel filters.
5. Rubber components in older engines may be susceptible to ethanol damage. All rubber components exposed to ethanol fuel should be inspected on a yearly basis by an experienced mechanic and replaced if necessary.
6. To provide the best possible performance, follow the marine engine manufacture’s recommendation for the minimum octane level.

Who's Who With The Crew
If you are still stumped trying to match the crew with their fact, here is a little help. Elizabeth spent 7 years in Germany. Tracy was an extra in the movie Wyatt Earp. Randy could ride a horse before walking. Alan can surf and skateboard. Dawn could swim before she could walk. Susan was JR Poultryman of the year. Ron did search and recovery for NASA.
Your marina staff have more interesting facts about them and we will do this again in the future.

Tall Ships Countdown: 3 Months
Get Ready because here they come. The Tall Ships will arrive in three months. We are currently working with the Tall Ships committees to try and bring an even more exciting event to the Marina than in 2005. Here are some of the changes:
- The esplanade will be decorated with Tall Ships banners and flags.
- Booths will be located on the esplanade - primarily dedicated to local non-profit groups.
- The hoist deck will serve as a food vendor area with picnic tables to sit down and view the activities in the waterway.
- Public outhouses on site. This will help keep the general public out of the marina restrooms.
Obviously, there will be a lot of activity on marina property . We definitely recommend carpooling to this event. So when making your upcoming plans for Tall Ships 2008, please plan accordingly.
Stay Tuned for further updates.
Daffodil Boat Parade Hits the Thea Foss Waterway This Year!!!

April 20th, 2008 the Daffodil Marine Regatta will head down the Thea Foss Waterway. Have your picnic baskets stocked by noon so you can sit back in your front row seat and watch the parade cruise by.
The tradition of the Marine Parade began 56 years ago, when, at the conclusion of the Daffodil Parade, the flowers were removed from parade floats and vehicles and taken to the Yacht Club. Yacht Club members would decorate their vessels & boats with the daffodils and parade up and down the Ruston Way waterfront. The tradition has grown into one of the largest marine parades in the Pacific Northwest.
The Tacoma Yacht Club will host more than 160 guest boats for the Marine Regatta and Parade. Yacht Club activities will commence on Friday with the conclusion of their regatta ending with the marine parade.
